Announcing Canopy Imaging – A new era of diagnostic services in Kerikeri | TRG Imaging

Canopy Imaging – A new era in diagnostic services in the Far North

On Friday, 9th August, Canopy Imaging proudly opened its first clinic, Te Mauora, in Kerikeri. The Hon. Dr Shane Reti, Minister of Health, led the ceremony, alongside local MP Grant McCallum, Deputy Mayor Kelly Stratford, Kaumatua Kipa Munro, and other distinguished guests.

This state-of-the-art, purpose-built clinic brings world-class diagnostics and has been designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region. It features the northernmost MRI in Aotearoa, New Zealand, allowing patients to access life-saving scans and diagnostics closer to home.

In a world first, the MRI is housed within the facade of a 1950s classic Kiwi caravan, a design choice aimed at reducing patient anxiety and enhancing the overall experience.

Beyond MRI services, the clinic offers ultrasound and X-ray capabilities, with plans to introduce CT scanning in early 2025. This comprehensive range of diagnostic services positions Te Mauora as a beacon of healthcare innovation in the Far North.

A Community-centred collaboration

Te Mauora is more than just a medical facility—it’s a community-centred collaboration that integrates design and accessibility with the local culture. The clinic's name, gifted by Ngāti Rehia, reflects its mission to deliver accessible and diverse services with respect. This partnership with Ngāti Rehia is evident throughout the clinic, from the woven harakeke wallpaper behind the reception to the Kawakawa wall decals and other thoughtful touches that honour Rongoā, traditional Māori medicine.

The playful Kiwiana caravan experience, coupled with state-of-the-art MRI technology, draws inspiration from the stunning northern beaches and the relaxed camping lifestyle synonymous with Kerikeri and the Far North. This design philosophy underscores Canopy Imaging's commitment to providing patient-centred care in an environment that resonates with the local community.

A Commitment to accessible healthcare

The opening of Te Mauora is a crucial development in providing patients in the Far North with essential diagnostic services closer to home. This reduces the need for long-distance travel, which has historically been a significant barrier to accessing high-tech imaging services. Until now, Whangarei was the only location in Northland with such capabilities, forcing patients to travel over three hours for these essential services.

“Our philosophy of providing patient-centred care is interwoven throughout the Te Mauora clinic,” says Toni Sinclair, Group General Manager of Canopy Imaging.

“High-tech imaging services in Kerikeri will provide access to a much-needed imaging option in the Far North. This initiative is not just about bringing advanced technology closer to home but ensuring that our community has the best possible healthcare at their disposal.”

The Te Mauora clinic represents the first step in Canopy Imaging's rebranding journey, transitioning from its former identity as TRG Imaging. This rebranding is part of Canopy Imaging's broader commitment to vertically integrated healthcare, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive and cohesive care across various medical disciplines.

What is an MRI?

MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses a powerful computer system, radio waves, and a strong magnet to produce highly detailed images of body tissues. This advanced technology helps doctors diagnose and monitor various conditions with remarkable precision.

The benefits of MRI scans

MRI scans are particularly useful for assessing:

  • Head and Spine: Detecting issues such as tumours, aneurysms, spinal cord injuries, and multiple sclerosis.
  • Abdomen and Pelvis: Evaluating organs like the liver, kidneys, and other abdominal structures.
  • Breast: Screening for breast cancer and other abnormalities.
  • Joints and Musculoskeletal Problems: Diagnosing conditions like torn ligaments, cartilage damage, and other joint issues.

By providing detailed images, MRI diagnostic imaging in Kerikeri can lead to early detection and better treatment outcomes.

Where can I get an MRI done?

In addition to MRI diagnostic imaging at our Kerikeri clinic, you can get an MRI done at several other locations across the North Island:
