Dr Mike Baker
Radiologist
Mike came to New Zealand from Zimbabwe over 30 years ago. He worked at North Shore Hospital for over 20 years. Mike has been involved in all aspects of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists including an Australasian Councillor, Chair of the New Zealand Branch and a Senior Examiner.
Mike is a Consultant Radiologist at Auckland Breast Centre, Canopy Imaging and BreastScreen Waitemata Northland. He has a special interest in breast imaging and intervention, and has been involved in mammography for over 25 years.
He performs image-guided intervention including hookwire placements, stereotactic and MRI guided biopsies. Mike came to New Zealand in 1978 from Zimbabwe, and has had many roles in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists.

Simon graduated from Liverpool University in the U.K. and completed his postgraduate Radiology training in the West Midlands U.K.
He worked as a Consultant Radiologist in Birmingham for 2 years, before moving to New Zealand in 2001 to take up a position at North Shore Hospital in Auckland and has recently joined Canopy Imaging.
Simon’s specialist interests include general, abdominal and oncology imaging.
He is lead radiologist at the weekly colorectal and gastroenterology MDMs at North Shore Hospital.
Dr Chris Bowles

From 1999 to 2005, Chris attended the Medical School at St George’s Hospital in London. Subsequently, he served as a Medical Officer in the British Army from 2005 to 2011, with an operational deployment to Iraq.
In 2009 to 2011 Chris undertook surgical training including MRCS. Following this, Radiology training from 2011 to 2016 at St George’s Hospital, Royal Marsden Hospital London, Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, completing FRCR in 2014.
Between 2016 to 2019, he held the position of Consultant Radiologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth, with a special interest in Head and Neck Radiology and Oncology Radiology. A joint Lead Radiologist for Head and Neck/Thyroid Cancer MDMs, Lymphoma/Haematology MDM.
Transitioning to a role as Consultant Radiologist and Clinical Director at Whangarei Hospital from 2020 to 2023, District Lead for Head and Neck/Thyroid Imaging and joint Lead Radiologist for Colorectal Cancer MDM.
Chris enjoys time with his wife and two children tramping, camping, and travelling.
Dr Nick Cochrane
Radiologist
Nick was born in Canada and moved to New Zealand in secondary school. He completed medical training in Dunedin/Wellington, and radiology training in Auckland.
He then undertook 2 years of post-grad experience in Edmonton, Canada, followed by consultant positions in Tauranga and Auckland. Nick then returned to Canada to a University Hospital teaching post from 1999-2015 and is now back in New Zealand permanently, working exclusively for Canopy Imaging in Auckland.

Laura (Ngāpuhi) is an Auckland trained Radiologist who gained fellowship with RANZCR in 2024.
Laura works at both Auckland Breast Centre and Auckland City Hospital where she is undertaking further subspecialty training in breast imaging alongside general radiology.
In addition to breast imaging her interests include female pelvic MRI and oncology imaging.

Attended Stellenbosch University Medical School in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and qualified with MBChB in 1983. Following with 2 years of conscription military service and then 18 months of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Durban as a registrar before switching to radiology at the University of Natal obtaining the degree FFRad(D).
My wife, daughter and I emigrated to New Zealand in 1993 spending the first 3 years in Timaru before moving to Whangarei in 1996.

Radiologist
Dr Charlotte De Wilde was born in 1991 in Bruges, Belgium. She completed her medical undergraduate studies at Ghent University in Belgium and graduated magna cum laude in 2015. She started her postgraduate radiology degree at Ghent University that same year and benefited from a very diverse training with one year conducted at Makerere University in Uganda and six months at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. She obtained the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR) and her specialist qualification in 2020. Dr De Wilde is a general radiologist and has focused mainly on oncology, emergency and breast imaging.

Radiologist
Peter is one of the founding members of Broadway Radiology which was set up in 1997.
He has worked at Palmerston North Hospital since 1990, and was a partner in Mercy Radiology, the principal Radiology practice in the area for many years, under the directorship of Dr Lauretta Tan.
Peter was born and educated in England and obtained his medical degree at King’s College Hospital in London. He first worked in New Zealand as a House Surgeon and then as Surgical Registrar at Waikato Hospital. He returned to England to complete his FRCS in 1984, and then entered the Oxford Radiology training scheme. He gained extensive experience in the radiology subspecialities, and developed his interest in interventional and vascular radiology.

Victoria graduated from Otago Medical School and completed her specialist radiology training in Auckland in 2013. She underwent fellowship training at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. As well as working at Canopy Imaging, Victoria also works as a Consultant Radiologist at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, Waitemata District.

Dr Jonathan Freedman

Jonathan completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 2000. Following Basic Surgical Training in the UK, he undertook specialist training in Clinical Radiology in Birmingham, UK. He underwent dedicated training in vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital - University Hospitals Birmingham. He completed his radiology training in 2010 and worked as a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at the University Hospitals Birmingham from 2010 to 2020.
In addition to Interventional Radiology, Jonathan served as a principal Uro-radiologist on the UHB Uro-oncology multidisciplinary team and lead radiologist for the Birmingham Prostate Clinic MDT.
In 2020 he moved to the Hawke's Bay to take up a post with HBDHB and pursue the New Zealand dream. He provides broad interventional radiology services and general diagnostic radiology services with a particular interest in Prostate MRI. He joined Canopy Imaging in 2022.

Jonathan originally trained in medicine at the Charing Cross and Westminster medical school in London. He spent his junior doctor years working in various hospitals in the UK and Christchurch.

Since finishing his training Jonathan has worked as a Consultant at several Hospitals and private practices in the UK and New Zealand.

Gerhard completed his medical training at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He qualified as a radiologist in 2018 at the University of Stellenbosch. After radiology training, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic imaging at the University of Toronto, Canada.
Gerhard is a general radiologist with an interest in chest imaging as well as image guided biopsies and therapeutic injections.
Dr Martin Gunn
Radiologist and Chief Medical Officer
Martin is a graduate of the University of Auckland School of Medicine and completed his radiology specialist training in Auckland. Following that, he undertook fellowships in abdominal imaging and emergency radiology at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA. He was offered a faculty position and remained at the University of Washington as a subspecialist radiologist, researcher, and educator for nearly 20 years, rising to Professor and a Vice Chair of the department. On his return to New Zealand, Martin joined Canopy imaging in Auckland.
As an imaging researcher and educator, Martin has authored more than 100 scientific papers, abstracts, textbooks, and presented at major radiology meetings worldwide. He remains an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington and is involved in ongoing research into imaging quality and patient safety as co-principal investigator of research funded by the US National Cancer Institute / National Institutes of Health.
Martin cares deeply about making efficient, premium quality radiology accessible for all patients, and aims to ensure that all customers feel they have received the best care possible from our team. In his spare time, he is drawn to the water - boating, sailing, and exploring Aotearoa's glorious coastline.

Alex is Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with more than 30 years of experience in clinical ultrasound. She completed O&G specialised training and obtained her Masters of Medical Sciences degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound in 1995 in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia. As she emigrated to New Zealand she has been working in O&G since 1997, completed RANZCOG training and obtained post-membership Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound.
Alex has been working as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the North Shore Hospital since 2006 and as Obstetrician Sonologist at Auckland Hospital since 2008. Apart from working in general O&G in both private and public sector, she has been actively involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as Honorary Senior Lecturer at Auckland University School of Medicine since 2009 and as RANZCOG Training Supervisor since 2008. She has been regularly taking part in ultrasound teaching on New Zealand national level, for doctors through RANZCOG and for sonographers through ASUM and ASA.
Alex has wide personal and professional interests, with a special interest in high-risk pregnancy and preterm birth, as she leads subspecialised Preterm Birth Clinic at the North Shore Hospital since 2020. She enjoys travelling and spending time with her family that includes her three children and a grandchild.

Jeanie completed her medical training in South Africa and qualified as a Diagnostic Radiologist in 2008.

Dr Helen Jo

Helen is a consultant radiologist at North Shore Hospital and BreastScreen Waitemata Northland. She is a general radiologist with a special interest in breast imaging including screening and diagnostic mammography.
She performs image-guided intervention, including hookwire placements and ultrasound and stereotactic guided biopsies. Helen came to New Zealand in 1994 from Korea, and graduated from University of Otago and completed her radiology training in Auckland.

Dr Leo Kallarackel

Dr Leo Kallarackel did his undergraduate MBBS in India and trained as a Radiologist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the United Kingdom and his subspecialty interests are Abdominal and Musculoskeletal Radiology. After completing his Radiology training in the UK, he completed Abdominal Radiology fellowships at St. Mark's Hospital, Harrow, UK and at Wake Forest Baptist Health, in North Carolina in the United States. He also did his fellowship training in MSK Radiology at University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital in New York.
His special interests are Uro radiology and thermal ablation of tumors and other image guided procedures.

Anthea completed her medical degree, MBChB at University of Free State, South Africa in 1997. She specialized in Radiology at WITS, South Africa, obtaining FCRad(Diag) 2005 and completed a Cross Sectional Imaging Fellowship at the University of Toronto in 2009. She worked as a full time partner in a private practice in George, South Africa for 8 years prior to joining Canopy Imaging 2020.
Anthea has a special interest in breast imaging, including MR breast and interventional breast procedures. She is also interested in musculoskeletal radiology and performs all ultrasound and CT guided steroid injections.

Sean completed his medical training at Bristol Medical School, England. He subsequently gained his MRCS qualification and started radiology training in London. He completed his radiology training in Hamilton, New Zealand, before returning to London to carry out a musculoskeletal imaging fellowship.

Richard graduated from Otago Medical School in 1999 and completed his radiology specialist training in Auckland in 2006.
He is a radiologist at both Canopy Imaging and North Shore Hospital. Richard is a past member of the Canopy Imaging board, and is currently a Part 2 examiner for The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists.

Dr Marcus Rault

Marcus graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine (University of London) in 2014 and started his radiology training at Norwich Radiology Academy in 2016. He obtained his FRCR in 2019. During his training he also obtained experience in oncology imaging at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in London and also NM/PET-CT experience at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
Marcus has a specialist interest in radionuclide imaging (nuclear medicine and PET-CT) and also body/oncology imaging. A member of ESR/ESHI/BNMS/ANZSNM.

Dr Abysinia Sibanda

Abysinia is the Medical Director at Absolute Radiology and a radiologist at the Taranaki Base Hospital.
He obtained his medical qualification from the University of Zimbabwe in 1997 and then moved to the UK to pursue post graduate qualifications in Medicine and then Radiology in Manchester.
He then completed Fellowship training in Interventional Radiology at St Mary’s, Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals in London, and has previously worked as a General and Vascular Interventional Radiologist in Manchester, UK.
His specialty interests include vascular, body and musculoskeletal interventional radiology, as well as diagnostic imaging.
Dr Rachelle Steyn

Rachelle obtained her Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine through the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 2009. Whilst working at Groote Schuur University Hospital she completed her Masters in Nuclear Medicine (2013); Diploma in Health Science Education (2016) and her MSc in Advanced Oncology (2021) through the University of Ulm in Germany.
After immigrating to New Zealand in 2021 she became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Australian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists in 2022.
Rachelle is based in Hawke's Bay and is also employed by Te Whatu Ora where she is actively involved in the advanced Nuclear Medicine training program as well as the National PRRT and general Nuclear Medicine services.
Rachelle’s vision for Nuclear Medicine in New Zealand is to see it expand, grow and flourish so that all New Zealanders have access to high quality general Nuclear Medicine Services and in particular access to PET CT and Theranostics.

Dr Glyn Thomas
Radiologist
Glyn performed his medical training in Otago, and his radiology training in Wellington. After working for 2 years in Perth he moved with his family to Palmerston North, where he has lived since, working for MidCentral Health until 2021. He was Clinical Director of BreastScreen Coast to Coast from its inception in 1999 until 2021. Glyn has been a College examiner for many years, and has served on various College committees. He continues to be one of the two “Lead Examiners” for the College in Breast Imaging.
Glyn joined Canopy Imaging in 2021, and also works for Te Whatu Ora on the BreastScreen computer system.

Dr Grant Thompson
Pain Management Specialist
Grant started his medical career as a General Practitioner including obstetrics, procedures, and hospice work. He then began his musculoskeletal training in the 1980’s, completing practical training and obtaining a post-graduate diploma in musculoskeletal medicine from the University of Otago.
He is currently involved in the management and running campus courses.
Grant travelled to London and became immersed in post-graduate training and obtained a qualification in Medical Osteopathy from the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).
On returning to New Zealand, Grant obtained his fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine and then a Masters of Health Science in Pain and Pain Management. For the past 18 years, he has been in full-time musculoskeletal practice, including fluoroscopic-guided procedures.
Grant now works for Canopy Imaging and is available for both landmark-based and image-guided injections.
Dr Matt Turei

Matt graduated from Auckland University School of Medicine and completed his radiology training in Palmerston North and Auckland. Matt was working in Perth, Australia before returning to New Zealand to join us full time at our Hawke's Bay practice.
Speciality – Musculoskeletal, image guided biopsies, mammography and breast intervention, breast hookwire placement and therapeutic injections.
Dr Nina Umaria

Nina graduated from the University of London and did her radiology training in the West midlands in the UK. Since moving to New Zealand in 2001, she has held the position of Consultant Radiologist at North Shore hospital in Auckland as well as being part of Canopy Healthcare.
She has extensive radiology experience and works closely with the Head and neck surgeons at North Shore hospital leading the bimonthly clinicoradiology meetings. She has been Director of Training and is actively involved in registrar training at North Shore hospital.

Andrew completed his medical and radiology training in the UK and has had considerable experience in working for the British Army both in the UK and abroad.
Andrew is based in Hawkes Bay, primarily in Hastings, working as a radiologist for Canopy Imaging as well as working for Hawkes Bay DHB.
Specialty – musculoskeletal ultrasound, fluoroscopic guided arthrography, CT & fluoroscopic guided nerve root injections and ultrasound and CT guided biopsy & drainage.
Dr Luke Wheeler
Radiologist
Dr Wheeler attended medical school in the UK and completed his postgraduate radiology training in South Wales with an additional 6th year fellowship in Vancouver, Canada in advanced abdominal imaging and intervention.
He worked as a Consultant Radiologist in Wales for 8 years before relocating with his family to Auckland in January 2020 when he took up a consultant post with Waitemata DHB, where he continues to work. He joined Canopy Imaging in November 2020.
His subspeciality interest is in gastrointestinal and genitourinary imaging and non-vascular intervention. He enjoys getting out in the fresh air either walking or playing tennis and enjoys playing the piano.

Kim is an Auckland trained Radiologist and gained a fellowship with the RANZCR in 2015.
Kim works at Auckland Breast Centre, North Shore Hospital and BreastScreen Waitemata Northland.
Her interest areas include breast imaging and general body imaging.
